Three fires are burning in Fort Steilacoom Park right now, and Lakewood police think they might have been started by arsonists.

Assistant Chief Mike Zaro said the proximity of the fires to each other and the short time frame in which they started lead investigators to believe someone might have intentionally set them.

“They’re certainly suspicious,” Zaro said.

UPDATE as of 4:09 p.m.: McCurdy says fires are now out. “No structures damaged and no people injured,” she said.

PREVIOUS POST: Firefighters from multiple agencies have descended on the park to battle the blazes, which don’t appear to be threatening any structures at this time.

West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy said nearly 30 firefighters are on the scene and that the fires, while not out, are “contained.”

They are burning in mostly wooded areas, McCurdy said. The fires all told cover about five acres, she said.

KIRO-TV is reporting that authorities have closed the park while they search for suspects and fight the fires.
