Seventh person charged in death of man bound, beaten, strangled and dumped in Graham

A 60-year-old man will be arraigned this afternoon on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree robbery in the death last month of Dean Barker.

John Joseph Brown was arrested Tuesday.

Pierce County prosecutors say Barker, 51, was attacked by a group of people while at Brown’s house in South Tacoma on Sept. 7. He was beaten, tied up and robbed there before being driven to another location where he was strangled.

Brown admitted the crimes began at his house and told detectives “that the victim thought he would be killed if Brown allowed the group to take him from the residence,” prosecutors said in a news release issued today.

Six others already are charged in the case. Some of the defendants claim Barker was attacked because they believed  he sexually assaulted a woman and might have had something to do with the disappearance of a 3-year-old girl. Prosecutors have no evidence corroborating those claims.
