A 32-year-old Tacoma man suspected of tying up his housemate and beating him over the head with a sledgehammer was arrested early this morning.

Police were called to the 600 block of S. Foss Avenue about 1:30 a.m. after someone called 911 to report seeing a man breaking into a paybox.

Officers arrived and spotted the man nearby. He gave several false names before police were able to determine his identity. They found the victim’s car keys and other personal items on the man.

He fled his M Street home Sept. 20 after borrowing a sledgehammer from his 69-year-old housemate and then attacking him with it. Police said he bound his housemate with duct tape before robbing him and fleeing the house in the stolen car, which was also recovered this morning.
