UPDATE as of 4:48 p.m. The man killed in the crash was a solider, spokesman Joe Piek said. The East Gate Road is open to outbound traffic, and may open completely later today, he said.

INITIAL POST: One person was killed this morning when a vehicle leaving Joint Base Lewis-McChord crashed into an empty guard shack.

The collision happened just before 5 a.m. on East Gate Road.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the accident.

One lane of traffic is open for drivers coming onto the base but traffic to exit the base is being diverted to the Roy gate, spokesman Joe Kubistek said.
