Puyallup police will patrol the city’s school zones during a 13-day campaign that starts Wednesday, the first day of school for the area.

Police said the campaign is meant to encourage safe driving in the zones through the coming year, though the department’s traffic unit is responsible for school zone safety year-round.

Traffic fines in schools zones are twice the cost of a regular violation, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill.
