Joshua Emanuel Howard of Tacoma pleaded not guilty today to charges of attempted murder in the second degree and unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree, after prosecutors said he tried to kill his estranged wife in front of their children July 6.

His bail was set at $1 million.

Howard shot at his wife as she was preparing to leave the house with the kids, according to charging papers.

He said he loved her and “I gotta kill you,” before firing the bullet, which lodged in the stairs, the papers state.

Howard turned himself into police Saturday.
