A drunk driver destroyed a light pole and several mailboxes on East 48th Street Friday night while trying to elude a Tacoma Police officer.

According to Tacoma Police, the incident began just before 11 p.m. when the officer clocked a driver doing 63 mph in a 30 mph zone on McKinley Avenue East.

The officer hung a U-turn and attempted to pull the man over, but instead of stopping the man accelerated and turned west on East 48th Street, where he lost control of his car.

After hitting the light pole and mail boxes, the driver got out of his car and ran. The officer gave chase and caught him as he was trying to enter a residence in the 4800 block.

After a brief struggle, the man was taken into custody and booked on DUI and obstruction charges.
