Spanaway man allegedly tried to kill himself after fatally shooting wife, daughter

Dean Holmes told investigators he held the same gun to his head he used to kill his wife and daughter, but could not bring himself to pull the trigger.

Instead, he tried to scrub his family’s blood from his clothes. He watched television. He spent hours sitting on Ruston Way staring at Puget Sound. Then he drove to the Pierce County Jail to confess.

Today, Pierce County prosecutors charged the 40-year-old Spanaway house painter with two counts of first-degree aggravated murder with an enhancement for using a firearm. Holmes is set to be arraigned this afternoon.

Suspected vandal charged with damaging Sounder train window

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 23-year-old man with vandalizing a Sounder train, causing $2,860 in damage.

Justin Caine Steik pleaded not guilty to second-degree malicious mischief Wednesday during his arraignment. Prosecutors said more charges may be pending and the King County Sheriff’s Office is investigating him for similar incidents.

Earlier this month, Steik is believed to have caused $25,000 worth of damage in a single day by etching “loser” and “eat my shorts” into a Sounder train in King County. In just one car, seven windows, eight door windows and two bathroom windows were damaged.

UPDATED: Two injured in Auburn shooting

UPDATE as of 7:13 p.m. Both victims were stable and doing okay this afternoon, police said. Officers seized a small grow operation, packaged marijuana and a shotgun from the scene, they said.

INITIAL POST: Two people were shot late Wednesday when at least two men burst into an Auburn house and started shooting, police said.

The home invasion occurred about 11:50 p.m. in the 6000 block of South 298th Place.

Late-night firing part of training at JBLM

Those near Joint Base Lewis-McChord may notice firing of demolitions and C4 from Aug. 30 to Sept. 5. during the hours from 12:30 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., according to the base.

The activity is part of training for soldiers to become proficient with the weapon system, and will be noticeable in the evenings, the base said in a release.

Police looking for suspects in robbery of University Place office

University Place police are looking for two suspects in the robbery of the Country Prime Foods office Aug. 17.

Two masked men allegedly entered the office about 9:30 p.m. on 70th Avenue Court West and demanded cash, police said.

One man threw an employee to the ground and held a semi-automatic gun to his head, police said.

The other suspect ransacked the office, police said.

The two allegedly took the employee’s wallet and then fled on foot.

Man accused of crashing car while driving under the influence with his infant and three-year-old in Fife

A man crashed his car in Fife Tuesday while allegedly driving under the influence with his infant and three-year-old child in the vehicle, police said.

Michael Brecheen, 27, was passing on a corner in a no passing zone when he swerved off the road and came to rest by a telephone pole Tuesday, Fife police Commander Tim Floyd said.

Officials were called to the crash in the 3100 block of Freeman Road East at 3:41 p.m. Tuesday.

Tacoma house fire displaces three people

Three people were displaced early this morning after a fire destroyed their Tacoma home.

The blaze started about 12:25 a.m. at a two-story house in the 1200 block of S. Adams Street.

Firefighters attacked the fast-moving flames as they spread from the deck up the side of the 1,588-square-foot house and through the attic.

Investigators said the fire was caused by “discarded smoking materials.”

One person was taken to the hospital with injuries related to the fire. Damages are estimated at $80,000.

Motorcyclist crashes into King County sheriff deputy’s car after pursuit

A motorcyclist led King County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase this morning before crashing into a patrol car, KIRO-TV reports.

The incident started in Federal Way when deputies tried to pull the man over for speeding and reckless driving. He initiated a chase, which went through Kent and Auburn before the motorcyclist crashed and fled on foot.

Deputies were not able to find the man but said he left the motorcycle at the scene and they should be able to track down the registered owner.
