UPDATE as of 1:37 p.m. A bench warrant has been issued for Howard’s arrest.

INITIAL POST: Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old Tacoma man with trying to kill his estranged wife in front of eight children.

Joshua Emanuel Howard is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree attempted murder, with enhancements for domestic violence, using a firearm and being within sight or sound of children. He has not yet been arraigned.

The shooting occurred July 6 at the couple’s home in the 6700 block of South J Street.  Howard’s wife told police they married in 2008 but had recently separated. They have four children together; she has another four of her own.

According to charging papers:

Howard spent the night to visit with the children but became angry with his wife the morning of July 6. When she realized he wasn’t calming down, she prepared to leave the house and called the children to come with her.

She heard a clicking noise as she walked down the stairs, turned around and saw Howard holding a revolver.

“He said that he could not do this anymore, he loved her and ‘I gotta kill you,’” documents state.

As she fled, he fired a single bullet that was later found lodged in the bottom of the stairs.

The children, who had gathered on the front porch, screamed and ran to neighbor’s houses or hid behind garbage cans.

Howard’s wife ran across the front yard and tried to scale a fence but she fell and her husband pointed the gun in her face. She was eventually able to wrestle it away from him after he pulled the trigger and it malfunctioned.

A neighbor later told police that he gave Howard a ride from the house and was unaware of what had happened.

Howard is not allowed to own a gun because he has five prior convictions – three for domestic violence crimes, two for unlawful possession of a firearm and one for unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver marijuana.

  1. “being within sight or sound of children” is a crime? Oh boy, a whole bunch of us are in big trouble.

  2. Regfool2 says:

Dear Lord, those poor kids. What they have gone through already. I’d say in this case Mr. Howard can go bye-bye to jail now, for good.

Most of these comments are not comments about this article, but of showing your own ignorance. A man shoots at his wife, the mother of 8 kids and you make the remarks that you did about her. shame on you. No one deserves to be shot at, he’s a criminal and you say she cant’ keep her legs together. shame on you. I don’t imagine she planned on having 8 kids from the time she was a little girl,(oh mommy, I want to have a dream wedding one day and then have 8 kids). Then have no father/husband that is good enough to stay and help raise them. Things change, and you people can too. Thank God the police took this serious, she will be relieved of him, at least for a while, at our expense of course, to the toon of about 100K per year. You may deserve that, but I don’t feel that I do.

  4. MrCarleone says:

Will someone please spay and neuter this couple, and take the kids away.

The taxpayers and sick and tired of supporting people such as this.

  5. serendipity says:

What is it with Tacoma? It seems there are more incidents of DV there than any other city in the entire state.

There is some speculation the land there is cursed because we slaughtered so many Native Americans on the soil in this location.

I am reading Garth Stein’s “Raven Stole The Moon” which is about shamans and Native American spirituality. I am becoming a believer in the idea that what we have done has cursed the city of Tacoma.

Whatever it is, it seems a story of murder or attempted murder or something horrible is reported every single day.

  7. Hatshepsut says:

Definitely a very bad home situation for those children. I feel really bad for them. As for the man having a gun illegally, that’s evidence that making it illegal to buy guns doesn’t stop someone from obtaining one anyway. If someone wants a gun, they will find a way to get one, through whatever avenues they can find.

  8. ginahopk says:

what the heck happened to taking care of your wife and kids and loving them, supporting them and giving them a good family home? Trying to shoot your wife in the head in front of the kids is NOT love. I hope this woman gets away from this man and they lock him up forever!

  9. If I had eight kids, I’d just off myself.

  10. whatthehell says:

what happened to 3 violent felonies and you’re out..anyway..she shoudlnt of pissed him’s her fault..i know him, he’s really a good guy.

she started having kids with him at 13 which is traditional in the culture they come from.
