Samuel Jordan Cruz of Bonney Lake pleaded not guilty today to the vehicular homicide of an elementary school teacher in Auburn last month.

Cruz was initially charged with vehicular assault, but prosecutors amended that when the teacher, Stacy Ankerfelt, died from her injuries last week.

Cruz, 25, was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol July 19 when his car hit Ankerfelt as she was standing by her car near her Auburn home, according to charging papers.

He told police that he was taking the drug suboxone for withdrawal symptoms from his opiate dependency, the papers show.

Ankerfelt was a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Scenic Hill Elementary in Kent.

Bail was increased to $250,000 today. Cruz remains in custody.

He has a pretrial hearing set for Sept. 11.

  1. Chippert says:

If you kill someone while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it should be an automatic first degree murder (under the second definition: “they know that such acts create a strong probability of death to another”. Everyone now knows what DUI now can do. At the very least it should be agrravated Murder 3. It is time to put these people away for a long, long time.

Chippert – AMEN to that. Condolences to Ms. Ankerfelt’s family.
