A man suspected of stealing wire from a Tacoma outbuilding was arrested Monday night, police said.

Officers were called just before 11 p.m. to an outbuilding in the 2300 block of S. Washington Street and saw a man stealing wire. The man initially fled on a bicycle but soon ditched the bike and fled on boot through blackberry bushes.

He was able to evade but police but officers later recognized the man as he pretended to be out for an evening jog. The man’s legs and arms were covered in cuts and scratches, police said.

The suspected wire thief was arrested on suspicion of malicious mischief, theft and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The stolen wire was recovered after police found it stashed in the area.
