The fire that destroyed a Lakewood furniture plant Friday has been deemed accidental, West Pierce Fire & Rescue reported today.

Spokeswoman Jenny Weekes said the blaze started in the finishing area of Grandwood Furniture, 7505 52nd Ave W, likely by rags that were improperly disposed of. It took about 50 firefighters to douse flames on the three-alarm fire, and the building was a total loss.

About 30 investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called in to assist with the investigation, which wrapped up this week. The ATF team has left the area.
