Jacqueline Rena Ray paid a felon $10,000 to kill her son-in-law because she believed he was physically abusing her daughter and might one day kill her, according to Pierce County prosecutors.

The 49-year-old Key Peninsula woman and her alleged accomplice pleaded not guilty this afternoon to two counts of first-degree murder. Luis Brea Barker, 37, also pleaded not guilty to first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Court Commissioner Craig Adams set Ray’s bail at $1 million and Barker’s bail at $3 million. He said he set Barker’s bail so high because he was “concerned for the safety of the community.”

Although there is only one victim – Leon Dwayne Bauchman, Jr., 33, of Puyallup – Ray and Barker face two counts of murder for intentionally killing Bauchman and killing him as part of a kidnapping scheme, Deputy Prosecutor Phil Sorensen said.

They can be convicted of both counts but only sentenced for one.

A couple walking their dog July 12 found Bauchman’s body in the 14900 block of 82nd Avenue Northwest, less than a mile from his in-law’s house. The body had been dumped 10 feet from the road. His ankles, wrists and eyes were covered with duct tape and he had been fatally shot.

Huh. Well, she certainly lives down to the “horrible” mother-in-law stereotype. Thankfully most of my friends and me were much more fortunate in our inlaws.

  2. No excuse for murder for hire…NONE. Two adult people need to sort out their own issues. Parents or anyone else do not have the right to interfere in anyones marriage…but hire someone to kill??? Pure evil.
