A Joint Base Lewis-McChord man will face vehicular assault charges after he crashed and the car he was driving erupted into flames on a southbound Interstate 5 median, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Judy Judson.
The crash happened about 4 a.m. Saturday, when the driver drove onto the grass median and hit a concrete utility box, Judson said.
“We believe alcohol was a factor,” she added.
Both the 21-year-old driver and his 29-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Judson said.
Transportation Security Administration agents from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport saw the accident on their commute and stopped to help. As two agents helped the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle, a third called 911, Judson said.
