INITIAL POST: Firefighters are trying to contain a 3-alarm blaze that broke out this morning at a Lakewood furniture manufacturing plant.
The fire was reported at 6:10 a.m. at Grandwood Furniture in the 7500 block of 52nd Avenue West, near Mount Tahoma High School. When crews arrived moments later and saw flames engulfing the building, they immediately called for a 2nd-alarm.
It has since been upgraded to a 3-alarm fire.
“At this point, we have a defensive attack on the fire,” West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy said.
That means firefighters are dousing the flames from outside the structure because it is too dangerous to go inside.
Thirteen engines and ladders are on scene, including three medic units, for a total of about 50 firefighters.
No injuries have been reported and it’s unclear what started the blaze.
