Steven Powell sued for damages in voyeurism case

Steven Craig Powell faces more legal action stemming from his surreptitious videotaping of two neighbor girls while they bathed or used the toilet.

The girls’ mother filed a civil lawsuit against Powell, 62, last week in Pierce County Superior Court. The woman seeks damages on behalf of her daughters for invasion of privacy and “severe emotional distress.”

“Defendant Steven Powell’s offensive and unlawful conduct of watching and filming plaintiff’s most intimate private affairs was extreme and outrageous in that it went beyond all possible bounds of decency and is utterly intolerable in a civilized society,” the woman’s attorney, Anne Bremner, wrote in the lawsuit.

Bremner told the Associated Press when she was preparing the lawsuit earlier this year that the family does not expect to get any substantial money from Powell. The hope is the suit continues to pressure him to discuss his daughter-in-law Susan Cox Powell’s disappearance, the attorney said.

The Utah woman went missing in 2009, and authorities considered Steven Powell’s son and the woman’s husband, Josh Powell, a person of interest in the case. Authorities and the missing woman’s relatives believe Steven Powell might have information about his daughter-in-law’s disappearance.

Detectives search Steven Powell’s Pierce County home in August 2011 seeking evidence of Susan Cox Powell’s disappearance. Josh Powell was living with his father at the time. It was during that search authorities uncovered evidence Steven Powell had been videotaping the neighbor girls.

A Pierce County jury in May convicted Steven Powell of 14 counts of voyeurism for filming the girls, then 9 and 8, during 2006 and 2007. Powell lived in an adjacent house at the time and used a zoom lens to peer inside his neighbors’ second-story window.

He was sentenced to two years, six months in prison in June.

Thank you Anne Bremner. I feel so sorry for the children involved with his voyeurism. I would bet money that Steven Powell knows exactly where Susan is…I hope this leads us to her. Susan’s family needs closure. I wish you success!

  2. Why drag the girls through court again? It won’t accomplish anything. Dumb move.

  3. perhaps simply “Moving on” would be healthier for the children (though not as profitable for Bremner who has become kind of a media glutton)

  4. Chippert says:

I hope that the two girls get every penny of the lawsuit, but of course they won’t. Ms. Bremmer will get the biggest chunk of it all. And that’s sad.

In spite of this, Steven Powell needs to pay and keep on paying for what he did.

  5. mojjonation says:

Money grab. If this were relevant it would have been done long ago. Good luck getting blood from a turnip. The best anyone can hope for is proceeds from a book or movie deal.

  6. Seasound says:

I think nobody better for the job, and nobody that will fight harder for those girls, then Anne Bremner! Do what you do best, and fight for justice!! Those girls need you!

  7. Barbie64 says:

The case could only be filed after the criminal case per an agreement regarding the girls’ records requests. It was served some time ago. This isn’t about money, it is about records, justice, some counseling costs and preventing contact with Steven Powell. Wouldn’t any parent ask that where their child is victimized?

  8. uintahsp says:

Since the govts of 2 states have shown themselves impotent in dealing with the P’s, anything any private party/parties can do is necessary, valid, and welcome!

  9. cmiklich says:

The girls had zero knowledge of Powell’s actions until the PCSD told the girls’ families.

The PCSD should pay out of their own pocket. Lord knows they must have a boatload of money lying around since they are totally ineffective against real crime!

Or perhaps, the cops just got upset there was competition in the sex crime department. Given the history of Janovich, Shields, French and Brame, et al!

  10. lovethemountains says:

Someone once told me cmiklich was for real but I don’t believe it.

  11. Emotional Stress? Gee had Josh Powell not brought the carnival into Stephen Powell’s home these girls would have never known he was even causing them so called stress! But now because the police found pictures on Stephen Powell’s computer all a sudden they are suffering emotional stress? what a rackett!

  12. Wrapper98439 says:

Steve took pictures of the girls. He did not distribute the pictures. The girls would have never known or been “hurt” if not for the police distributing the pictures. Seems the county is responsible for the damages.

  13. cclngthr says:

    Wrapper98439 and others,

Powell DID take pictures of the children without their, OR their parents request. He also took the pictures while the girls were in a legally protected private space and were deemed sexually motivated.

Of course people think it is perfectly fine to take pictures of naked kids when it is considered sexual abuse of that child. This is why, when we had developers calling police when they had film which had kids in that environment, to be developed for customers.
