Temperatures are expected to hit sweltering highs this weekend and forecasters have dubbed it the hottest weather of the year.
Today will reach 79 degrees, with temperatures climbing to 88 on Saturday and 89 on Sunday.
The Seattle/Tacoma area could even break a record Sunday if temperatures stretch into the 90s, according to the National Weather Service. The record for that date – Aug. 5 – is 89 degrees, which was set in 1977.
The hot spell is caused by a combination of high pressure and a low level offshore flow.
In a special weather statement, forecasters remind people to drink plenty of water, limit sun exposure and be cautious around rivers and lakes when the urge to cool off takes hold.
Temperatures will drop back to the high 70s on Monday.
