Renton police: Man falsely reported assault to explain gunshot wound

A Renton man lied to police this morning and said he had been shot by two men to cover up the fact that he accidentally shot himself, police said.

The man reported the assault just before 5 a.m. He told officers that two men had approached him outside a restaurant in the 600 block of Rainier Avenue South, and one man shot him in the leg.

The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

During the investigation, police went to the apartment where the victim claimed he had been drinking with friends prior to the shooting. They found evidence there that leads them to believe the victim shot himself inside the apartment and falsely reported an assault to explain his injury.
