Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered today that flags be lowered to half-staff Friday for state diver David D. Scheinost of Puyallup.

The 24-year-old geoduck compliance diver died July 24 on the job near Bainbridge Island. He went missing while diving to sample for paralytic shellfish poisoning, for his position with the Department of Natural Resources.

Scheinost’s body was recovered three days later, close to where he disappeared.

Flags at state agency buildings will be lowered to half-staff Friday until the close of business.

A funeral will be held Sunday for Scheinost.

  1. I hope not the overblown processions for the cops.

  2. Alinup, you are a heartless ass…The only thing overblown here is your ego and sense of entitlement…We can only hope that when you pass, you’ll in be an unmarked grave, overlooking a sewage treatment plant and is perpetually downwind from where it’s most foul…

  3. I can see Al’s point. While sad and tragic that anyone should lose their life at work, it happens every day. I m sure the deceased was doing something he loved to do unlike most workers who do dangerous jobs.

This state has been in a quandary since the Seattle and Lakewood cop killings. Then you get a cop who drives into an elk and he gets a state funeral. Then a city employee who gets shot in her own home.

The bar for state level mourning is now too low.

  4. DeschutesMan says:

IQof88 (I believe your IQ alright) This world of No heart, soul and morality is giving me a pain in the backside. Grow up and mourn for people who die while doing a thankless job for us and hopefully someone may care if you kick the bucket and not rank on you.

Alinup is just and bonerfied idiot

  5. Why is the death of a state worker worthy of state mourning where a power lineman losing his life in a blizzard or gale is not. State employment should be such a discriminator. Or city or county employment.

We have reached the point of farce and it detracts from what should be a private recognition and mourning.
