A dog was killed today when a fire tore through a Sumner house, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The blaze was reported about 12:45 p.m. in the 8100 block of 148th Avenue Court East. Fire officials said the flames quickly spread to the attic.

An elderly couple who lived there managed to escape on their own but their 12-year-old dog died.

The cause is under investigation but a candle left burning in a bedroom is believed to have sparked the fire.
