UPDATE 3:45 p.m.: Three exotic birds were rescued from cages in the back of the home, said fire spokesman Joe Meinecke. The fire appears to have started in the garage, but investigators are still determining where and how it began, Meinecke said. The structure is “heavily damaged,” mostly in the garage and the part of the house above it, he said. A truck parked outside the house was also damaged.
3:16 p.m.: The fire is out. There is heavy damage to the building and there are no injuries to report, according to Tacoma fire.
INITIAL POST:Tacoma firefighters were called to a blaze at a tri-level home about 2 :15 p.m. today in Northeast Tacoma.
Smoke and flames were showing from the back corner of the house in the 3400 block of 55th Avenue Northeast, said Battalion Chief Dave McRoberts.
Everyone seems to have left the building without injury he said.
Officials are still fighting the blaze.
