A Pierce County road crew working near Roy spilled 50 gallons of asphalt after a tank lid blew off this morning while the crew heated oil for the job, according to a county spokesman.

The incident occurred on Allen Road. No one was injured and the state Department of Ecology was notified.

The tank venting system may have malfunctioned, county spokesman Hunter George said. An official cause hasn’t been determined.
