A Tacoma driver and his passenger were seriously injured early Saturday morning when their car ricocheted off a fully loaded semi truck and then hit a rock wall.

About 60 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the truck onto S. Orchard Street.

Witnesses said the accident began at approximately 1 a.m. when two cars were racing southbound on Orchard, with speeds estimated at more than 80 mph.

The driver of one of the cars lost control of his vehicle in the 4400 block of Orchard, striking the west curb with the rear wheel on the passenger’s side.

The tire deflated and the car fish-tailed across the centerline, striking the loaded truck, which was headed in the opposite direction.

The car continued another 30 feet, police said, and then hit a rock wall.

The driver of the car and his passenger both sustained significant injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

The driver of the car was arrested for vehicular assault.

A hazardous materials team from Tacoma Public Works responded to control the diesel spill, police said.
