The owner of an Enumclaw roofing company pleaded guilty today to partially paying his employees in cash to avoid $1 million in payroll taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Bruce Sprague, 52, faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 8. His plea deal requires him to pay $1.2 million in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

Prosecutors said Sprague, who owns Bruce’s Roofing, paid his employees a portion of their wages in cash from 2005-2008. That means he did not have to pay payroll taxes on the wages paid in cash and he did not collect employment taxes like Social Security and Medicare.

Just like Tree Trimmers? No Way!!

  3. How about property owners that pay their employees under the table and violate all Tenant Landlord Laws, she gets away with it because at the end of the year on a few of her employees she tells the IRS they only made maybe $1200 when in actuality the employee made over $40,000.

The city is aware of this their hands are tied at the moment the State is aware and yet nothing has been done so before they start attacking this guy there are bigger fish to fry the worst Slum Property Owner and Slum Landlords all right here in the city of Lakewood

  4. Sandy3, so what you’re saying is that since your favorite targets haven’t yet been rounded up, then everyone who does this should go free?

Yours ends up being an “anti-law & order” stance. Interesting.

What about all those business owners of restaurants letting us, the eating public, pay their employees under-the-table via our tips! Aren’t they avoiding the payment of social security and other employment taxes…perhaps the correct word is ‘evading’ rather than ‘avoiding’?

  6. Gubmint hates competition. What about all the gas stations now giving 10 cents off per gallon when paying in cash? There is no way in HE_LL the Revenuers can audit each and every station owners’ books to see if the Gubmint is getting their unfair share. When people’s tax dollars are misappropriated for things like hanging baskets lining city streets, Gubmint vehicles for office employees, social programs for illegals or just plain sending the taxpayer’s dollars to foreign countries instead of “Taking Care of OUR OWN” – Veterans, Elderly and the others that have paid their fair share into Social Security, then more power to any AMERICAN BUSINESS OWNER that can stash a few tax-free dollars away !

Let’s see come Nov. 2012 we will be eating popcorn watching the Puyallup realtors brokers squirm as Portmann et, al get their day in court with surprise witnesses and co-conspirators……Puyallup realtors will soon be exposed come Nov. from the good o’l Feds!
