Park is charged with first-degree attempted arson for a Feb. 9 incident inside his Tacoma apartment where he allegedly set his mattress on fire. Pierce County prosecutors contend he removed the smoke detectors and flames were three feet off the floor.
4:06 p.m. Officers used a PA system, flash bangs, gas and a K-9 when trying to take the man into custody, Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said. Police breached the door and the K-9 was deployed. Then the man was apprehended.
Schrock said the suspect was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries from the K-9 contact and for a mental evaluation. Police expect him to be arrested on the felony warrant when he is released from the hospital.
INITIAL POST: A condominium building in Federal Way has been evacuated as police continue an hours-long standoff with a man wanted for arson.
Police said they know who the man is, but did not identify him other than to say that he has a felony warrant for his arrest out of Pierce County.
The standoff began about 8:40 a.m. when officers were called to the Heritage Condos, 117 S. 340th Place, for an assault. The suspect has ignored orders from police to surrender.
Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said a SWAT team has been called in “due to the current assaultive behavior and previous contact with police that was threatening in nature.”
