A 25-year-old Tacoma woman is accused of starving to death two kittens she abandoned in her apartment for more than a month.

Pierce County prosecutors have charged Rachel Dudley with two counts of first-degree animal cruelty.

According to charging papers:

The apartment assistant manager entered Dudley’s apartment in the 3500 block of S. Orchard Street on March 28 to do an occupancy check and saw there were two kittens inside.

The manager said Dudley had not been home for “quite some time” so she called Dudley, who said she would come home to care for the animals.

On April 6, the manager again went inside the apartment to check on the fire extinguisher and found one of the kittens dead. The other kitten was still alive so the manager fed it dry food and gave it water until animal control officers arrived.

The surviving kitten was emaciated with its back, rib and hips bones protruding. Its face was also sunk in.

After being taken to the Humane Society, veterinarians found the kitten was extremely dehydrated and starved. It was euthanized two days later.

Officials said “the kitten likely suffered a slow, painful and debilitating death.”

Dudley told officers she was last at her apartment in early March and a bad breakup with her boyfriend prevented her from thinking about her pets.

I just do not understand what is so wrong with some people.

We need much harsher sentencing for animal abuse crimes, and the courts need to show more of a willingness to apply the high end and make it stick. I hope she sees prison time for this, or better yet make her serve her sentence in the Pierce County jailhouse. Never been there myself but I hear the accomodations are less than desirable.

Ms. Dudley you are a self-absorbed, pitiful, shameful example of a human being.

  2. Sheesh….that’s the second person ive known (or thought i knew) since last week that’s made the paper for some terrible ish….

Put her in jail and starve her and hope she suffers a slow, painful and debilitating death.

  5. What a loser! 25 years old and she blames a break up on leaving these poor creatures?!

I wonder what type of people Richard, Olivia, Christopher, Charlene and Brian are?

  7. Dear Mr mshacker
You wonder what type of people they are well let me tell you they are wonerful kind hearted people that are devistated. Remember there are two sides to every story. You should be asking why the landlord did nothing when they knew the apartment was no longer being occupied yes maybe they called maybe they didn’t. Maybe they should have called animal Control when they did the occupancy check. As far as Brian please DO NOT SPEAK ILL OF THE DEAD! this is a loving family dealing with a traggity.

  8. It’s Obvious that MSHacker needs to do her “google searching” a little better! What did those people have to do with this article? Plus why are we posting peoples full names, the family is already going through enough i really dont think thats necessary! Whoever is in charge of deleting and reading these comments needs to delete MSHACKER’s as they did mine. If you dont want the world to see the truth to this article whats the point in having a comment section? People are right to their opinions, but i think some people take it to a whole new level!!RIP uncle brian!

  9. Maybe you should actually take the time to hear the other side of the story before passing judgement. I actually thought that’s what the courts were for? As for the family they are trying to grasp this situation also but maybe you should take the time to actually get to know them and then you would realize they are a very down to earth loving family who cares deeply for animals all animals! Before you pass judgement or throw out anymore “possible” relatives names get your facts straight! That’s all the family would ask.

It is possible these two kitty’s were the ‘runts’ or smallest of a BIG litter already going hungry, as the larger kittens push them out of the way … then given away in their sickly condition.

Besides the lack of food, parasites or virus could have been the root cause of their demise. Without a vet DR, the original owner, likely gave away sickly kittens they didn’t want to keep!
