A conveyor belt caught fire at Schnitzer Steel in Tacoma this morning, injuring one worker and halting work while firefighters try to cool the equipment.

The blaze was reported about 8:30 a.m. at the plant, 1902 Marine View Drive.

Employees threw water on the flames themselves until Tacoma firefighters arrived.

“The fire is essentially out but they’re cooling it down,” Battalion Chief Jim Zuluaga said about 9 a.m.

One worker received minor injuries.
