Federal Way man stabs self after standoff with police

A 911 hang-up call drew police to a Federal Way home around 2 a.m. Sunday, and upon arriving, police heard a woman screaming inside the home.

According to Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock, as police attempted to make contact with the woman, she ran out of the house in the 3900 block of Southwest 328th Place and told officers that her husband was inside the house with their four children. She said he was armed with a knife.

“The victim told police her husband had assaulted and raped her,” Schrock said. “When police arrived the suspect held a knife in a threatening manner and told her to make the police go away or they would have to kill him.”

While the police tried to contact the man via PA system and telephone, the four children were able to safely exit the home, Schrock said.

Just before 5:30 a.m., the Valley SWAT team arrived and used several methods to try to get the suspect out of the house, to no avail.

Eventually, “the front door was breached. The suspect was located with two self-inflicted knife wounds to the torso,” Schrock said in a news release.

The 40-year-old suspect was taken into custody without resistance, and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

According to police, the woman sustained minor injuries. None of the children were injured.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
