A 17-year-old boy was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after nearly drowning tonight in Steel Lake, South King Fire & Rescue reported.

Someone called 911 about 8:15 p.m. to report the boy struggling off shore in the public swimming area of the Federal Way lake. He then went under the water.

Rescue crews arrived on the scene about nine minutes later and soon found the boy in about 12 feet of water, the agency reported.

Firefighters and paramedics from South King Medic One began CPR and regained a heart beat after about 15 minutes.

He then was taken to Harborview in critical condition.
