A man who filed a $20,000 insurance claim for a fake dead cat faces charges of first-degree attempted theft and felony insurance fraud, the Office of the Insurance Commissioner said Thursday.
The 29-year-old Tacoma resident used animal photos from the Internet in the alleged scheme.
He filed a claim for a minor traffic accident in 2009. More than two years later he asked for additional payment, claiming his “beloved cat Tom” was killed in the accident, the Office of the Insurance Commissioner said.
The office said the man told the insurance company that the cat had been like a son to him.
A claims representative did a Google Image search and found pictures the man submitted on various websites.
He’s scheduled to be arraigned next Wednesday, July 11.
