A 24-year-old Tacoma man drowned in the Naches River near Yakima this afternoon, authorities said.

Martin Diego, his brother and his girlfriend were driving through the area on their way to Tacoma when Diego decided to stop and get into the water.

The girlfriend, Breanna Marquardt, told The Yakima Herald-Republic that Diego didn’t return for about 15 minutes so they called police.

His body was recovered by search teams.
