A 31-year-old man was stabbed and critically injured late Wednesday during an altercation at a Hilltop grocery store.

The victim was listed in critical but stable condition at Tacoma General Hospital, Tacoma police reported.

The stabbing occurred shortly after 11 p.m. at Safeway, 1112 S. M St. The victim and suspect had been in the store when they got into an altercation. Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the two men know each other.

“They have had dealings previously,” he said.

The victim was stabbed in the chest. The suspect, described only as a black man about 6 feet 2 with a thin build, left.

The victim drove himself to Tacoma General for treatment.

No arrest has been reported. The investigation was continuing.
