Pierce County Jail officials were investigating the death of a 45-year-old inmate Wednesday as an apparent suicide.

Corrections officers responded to a medical emergency call about 3:15 p.m. and found the man in his cell with a sheet around his neck, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Lakewood police booked the man into jail Sunday on suspicion of drunken driving, obstructing a police officer, driving with a suspended license and drug-related charges. He also had an immigration hold, Troyer said.

The man was in a cell by himself and had not shown any signs of being suicidal, Troyer added.
