UPDATED at 2:05 p.m.

Pierce County prosecutors have decided not to file charges against a 46-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing another man early Wednesday.

Phil Sorensen, assistant chief criminal deputy prosecutor, said the man acted in self-defense.

The man had been arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of Stanley Howard.

The 56-year-old Tacoma man was found dead early Wednesday in an alley off South 19th Street between South M Street and South Sheridan Avenue.

Tacoma police detectives say Howard and the 46-year-old man have known each other for several years. They had an argument either late Tuesday or early Wednesday and Howard made threatening comments toward the younger man, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The two then parted ways.

A while later, Howard showed up at the man’s Hilltop home. He knocked on the door and called the man outside. Howard had a knife, Fulghum said.

The younger man also had a knife. Howard tried to attack the younger man. A confrontation ensued and Howard was stabbed in the chest, Fulghum said.

Howard walked away from the home. A woman called Tacoma police about 3:15 a.m. after spotting his body in the alley.

Howard appeared to have been headed in the direction of his home, Fulghum said. A knife was found with his body.

The other man heard about the discovery and went to the scene. He talked to detectives about his fight with Howard and was arrested.

“He had no idea it was as serious as it ended up being,” Fulghum said.

Just another Hilltop murder. Maybe we should ban all knives in Tacoma.

Now there’s an intelligent and sensitive remark, Rawdibob.

  3. Maybe we should ban you from commenting “rawdibob”

Ok folks this is a simple KNIFE FIGHT are we so jaded that a life and death fight means nothing?

  5. Justice for Howard! Just like Justice for Trayvon! Oh, wait, … they’re both black?

Nuttin’ to see here. Move along.

  6. skippythedog says:

…just a couple of dirtbags, doing what they do…..

  7. This really makes me sad. Mr. Howard lived for 56 years to die in an alley from a knife wound. The picture makes me think it wasn’t an easy 56 years.

  8. Movieguy says:

That’s 1 less sex offender running around the streets of Tacoma. Mr. Howard was the subject of a community notification just about a month ago, following convictions in King & Pierce counties.

  9. wildcelticrose says:

I did not find Mr Howard in the Pierce County sex offender database.

He does however resemble someone we have photographed engaging in criminal activity.

his body was found in my alley, about five blocks from my house, so it is likely the same individual.

Both the gentlemen being black has little to do with it. In this case, Mr. Howard was armed with more than Skittles and iced tea.

  12. Not a good man, but still a sad story.

  13. Coach81 says:

If the man who fatally stabbed Howard was white, this would be more than a small story in the TNT, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the death. The fact that this type of violent crime happens routinely in the Hilltop area, involving predominantly black assailants and victims (most of whom are unarmed-skittles or no skittles), and gets little-to-no attention from even local media (TNT), let alone national media, is the point that I assume pgroup was trying to make.

  14. Longinus says:

If he had been charged then it would be a “2fer.” One criminal dead and one in jail.

  15. rawdibob says:

I cannot tell you how happy I am since my wife retired from teaching in Seattle and we were able to FLEE the city.

Now, why was it that these two guys got into a knife fight? The only better outcome, if they killed each other.

  16. troger888 says:

wow in California there is no self defense laws. I was attacked walking to a buss stop by 6 guys, I fought them all off yet was arrested for assault & battery. Even though there were witnesses that saw the attack. I’m glad this man got off, he was very lucky as he could have been fighting for his life against the system. I am very very surprised the cops took his word.

  17. Ortingmom says:

because he was black huh pgroup? Typical leftist response……

  18. troger888 says:

So I take it Washington state has self defense laws, in that you can defend your self and not go to jail for protecting your life… that’s fantastic.
