UPDATED at 1:20 p.m.

Tacoma police have arrested a man in connection with the death of another man found in a Hilltop alley early today.

The suspect, described as in his 40s, has been booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said this afternoon.

Investigators say the victim and suspect knew each other. They had a fight and the victim was stabbed, Fulghum said.

An anonymous caller called 911 just before 3:15 a.m. and reported finding the man’s body was in the alley of South 19th Street between South M Street and South Sheridan Avenue, Fulghum said.

Officers arrived and found the dead man, who was believed to be in his 50s, Fulghum said. Officers who work in the area recognize him as someone who frequents the Hilltop.

Detectives and forensic investigators spent the morning at the scene. South 19th Street blocked between South M and South Sheridan was shut down while they did their work.

Fulghum said the woman who made the anonymous call came to the scene and told detectives who she was.

The suspect also might have contacted investigators at the crime scene and made comments about knowing the victim, Fulghum said.

“They are not looking for anybody else,” he added.

The reason for the fight between the suspect and victim wasn’t immediately known.

Just another Hilltop murder. Does Tacoma have a gang problem there?

You must not live on the Hilltop. Murders are not routine here. What makes you think they are? It’s actually a pretty nice place to live. I live pretty close to where this happened, and that’s a really busy area. Hopefully the perp will be caught soon.

Yes It is a very nice area, during the day light hours. I lived in the hill top for around 4 years. You can usually leave bikes unattended and no problem. But after dark watch out, the night crawlers prowl. Try walking after 11 and a weekend night and you better be armed.

I agree with KATurner. We have lived in Hilltop since 1988. We are still alive and have lost only one lawn mover over the years. This can happen anywhere.

The incident happened right across from my house and the suspect lived right behind me and it is anything but a good neighbor hood. i have had lots stolen from my fenced in yard and a hard to open tool box, the house has been broken into before and there is still too much drug activity in the area. I now do not step out side without a gun on me. I am prior military and do my best to know my surroundings. yes during the day its not as bad but as perseus stated at night is when you better be careful.

Oh Stacey, how do you decide which story to report? I would stack them in this order: 1 and 2: murder or rape. Malicious mischief last; missing blonde girls come first but being the leaders you are, pick the person of color who has gone missing. Ignore the man who threw garbage on the top of the pile and refused to enlist.

I know a lawyer in town who can sing “Alice’s Restaurant” by heart. He taught disability law at Harvard. I don’t think everyone will understand what I just said. McCarthy would. I think. Or Kits.
