Update: Seven men and seven women sworn in to hear case against Steven Powell. Two of them will serve as alternates.

Opening statements likely Wednesday.

Previous post:Prosecutors and defense attorneys whittled a pool of 70 potential jurors for Steven Powell’s voyeurism trial to 56 by noon today.

They hope have seated a jury of 12 with at least an alternate or two by the end of business today.

Powell is charged with 14 counts of voyeurism for allegedly taking photos of naked and seminude girls and women without their knowledge. He’s pleaded not guilty.

The case has attracted national media attention because Powell is the father-in-law of missing Utah mother Susan Cox Powell.

Lawyers spent most of their time asking potential jurors about pretrial publicity and their feelings about the judicial system in general and sex
crimes in particular.

Six jurors said this morning they didn’t think they could be fair to Powell judging from what they know about the case or their feelings regarding sex crimes. Superior Court Judge Ronald Culpepper dismissed them. Eight others were excused Monday for various reasons.

Culpepper is expected to rule this afternoon on whether excerpts of
Powell’s journals will be admitted as evidence. Some of the entries contain what defense attorneys contend is prejudicial information.

glad I wasn’t on jury duty this week.

I might not have resisted the urge to spit on him.
