West Pierce Fire & Rescue was honored this week for a program on lake safety that they implemented two years ago.

They were awarded the Tom Warren Innovation Award Monday at the state Drowning Prevention Network meeting, which was held at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Their program put number labels on docks and buoys at Gravelly Lake to help those in distress pinpoint their location when calling 911. Dispatchers can then cross-reference the number to a nearby house and provide responding officers with a more specific location.

The program is also being implemented on American Lake.
