Tacoma police continue to search for a man suspected of firing at two University of Puget Sound campus security officers Wednesday night.

Police investigators have an idea who they are looking for, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said today. They have not released a description of the suspect.

The campus security officers confronted the man about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday near Union Avenue and North 14th Street. The security officers had been alerted to a man trying to break into cars behind several university-owned houses.

When the officers arrived, the suspect pulled a gun, fired one shot and then drove off in a stolen vehicle. No one was injured.

Tacoma police later found the car parked outside an abandoned house near Sixth Avenue and Alder Street. Officers searched the house but did not find anyone inside, Fulghum said.

We will update this post when more information becomes available.

Always wondered what good is security without a gun, anyone can run and call the police.

  2. nonstopjoe says:

We’ve been told the suspected perp is male – which lets 50% of the population off the hook. Good job police department – now I know
who to look for – a guy of of unknown age, race, size, clothing. Next man I run into I’ll call 911.

nonstopjoe – Sometimes when the police know who they are looking for (as the article indicates) they don’t want to tip their hand by letting the media know.

Ok all you police know it alls. They aren’t going to release the name right away. First, someone will try and go find him. Second, if he knows they are looking for him, he may leave the area. Those of you who have never worked in Law Enforcement, don’t comment on the police actions. There are proceedures in place to do this right, not the way you think it should be done.

  5. He must be hiding out at Starbucks, I notice a lot of law enforcement staking the place out all the time

I have a pretty good idea who it is… he returned two mornings after breaking into my car. Skinny dude with an orange fluorescent stocking cap. Ive seen him wearing around the neighborhood. He may not be the one who broke into my car, but he was hiding in my alley with a flashlight at 0500.

Dear Members of the Campus Community,

Thank you for being vigilant and alert about campus safety. Thanks to a call from a student reporting a person behaving suspiciously near N. 14th and Union yesterday afternoon, Security Services was able to respond immediately.

As of 9 a.m., Tacoma Police report that they have identified the suspect and located the vehicle he was driving, but have not yet apprehended him. The suspect is a known car prowler whose primary intent was property theft. As he fled the scene, he was not believed to be a risk to campus safety. Tacoma Police are keeping in regular contact with me, and I will notify the campus as soon as we have more information. Meanwhile, we have added extra security and patrols near campus as a precautionary measure. (See link for more)

  8. Of course they know who they are looking for. They have the guys drivers license because the security guard still had it in his possession. How about a name and picture so the public could help find him?
