UPDATED at 11:40 a.m.

Tacoma police arrested one man and were searching for two others after they allegedly broke into a woman’s South Tacoma home Tuesday night, demanded her bank account access information and then ransacked her home.

Officers went to the home in the 3600 block of South Gunnison Street just before midnight because of a 911 hangup call, police reported.

When they arrived, they spotted a suspect carrying a large screen television from the home. The suspect saw the officers and ran, police reported.

Officers set up containment and a police dog found the suspect a short distance from the home.

The 20-year-old suspect, reportedly an active gang member, told officers that he and an accomplice broke into the 67-year-old woman’s home earlier in the night. The accomplice had a gun and the two intruders held the woman hostage and demanded the access code to her bank account, police said.

The suspect remained at the house as the accomplice left. The accomplice was picked up by a third suspect and tried to access the victim’s bank account, police said.

When that failed, the accomplice returned to the house. The two then ransacked the home and filed backpacks with the woman’s belongings.

Officers found the backpacks and recovered the victim’s stolen items.

The arrested suspect suffered minor injuries after he was contacted by the police dog, police said. He was booked into Pierce County Jail early today on suspicion of first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery and unlawful imprisonment.

The accomplice was described as an Asian man dressed in black clothing. He wore a bandana over his face and wielded the gun, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

Investigators suspect he slipped out of the victim’s house at some point.

The 67-year-old woman was upset but not injured in the incident, Fulghum said.

Detectives didn’t know why the suspects picked the woman’s house.

  1. “The arrested suspect suffered minor injuries after he was contacted by the police dog, police said”.

Haha, should put them in a room together so that police dog can contact them until they confess. Haha. And then more contact for good measure

  2. royboy361 says:

    Career criminals at work.

  3. pescatore says:

Gang bangers picking on 67 yr old women, typical for that ilk.
Cut off their gonads, and eradicate them from the gene pool.

  4. This is a shame and you are going to see more of these people shot because the justice system is not doing there job.

  5. gang members are so brave

  6. mojjonation says:

Someone should give granny a free handgun with self defense lessons. Imagine the wake up call these guys would have gotten if grandmama had popped off a few rounds center mass in one of them.

  7. nonstopjoe says:

Put police dogs on diets similar to junkyard dogs – that’ll take care of perps who attempt to outrun canine choppers ready to chomp.

  8. NineInchNachosII says:

    too many guns.

  9. Birds-how did the justice system do anything wrong here? If we want the laws changed we have to make that happen. The police and justice system are following the laws that are in place. I feel so badly for that poor woman; how frightening. Glad they got ‘em! Good job TPD!

  10. dontbesilly says:

Why is it the toughest guys always like to beat up on old folks? This incident, the old lady getting knocked over at Fred’s on Pacific. Gah, these guys must’ve never played outside when they were young and earned neighborhood bumps and bruises.

  11. mojjo? You are banking on a 67 year old woman to engage in a gun battle with perps who are also armed? Although it sounds good on the surface, its not always practical. Face it, guns are not for everyone nor are they the only solution. Unlike you, a lot of us don’t delight in the thought of someone being shot. Killing someone, good or bad, is not something to gloat about. I’ve taken self defense, and it was hands on. An elderly woman’s bones will break easily. She might not be able to physically do the class. What happens if she breaks bones during training? She could die. How about a good well trained ex police dog? There’s also those necklaces/ bracelets for seniors where they press a button and help comes.

  12. Society has allowed criminals to thrive due to lax enforcement. This behavior is a penalty to society.

  13. cking9900 says:

What time was the incident? Was she sleeping? Did they break a window? Did they knock on the door and point te gun at her? More info would be great. This way, people can hopefully learn something.

  14. FinalWord says:

Quit calling them gangs, call them what they are..Losers.Head lines should read. A couple of Losers attacked an older woman and robbed her at gunpoint. When you refer to them as a gang. it makes them proud.

  15. SandHills says:

While it is a fact that most of these thugs pray on the weakest, one should point out they are ignorant in the extreme. not just ignorant in the normal sense, but ignorant in being criminals.

One should point out to these thugs a proven fact attributed to Willie Sutton when asked why he robs banks – he supposedly replied “Because that is where the money is”.

Rather than pray on the weak – who may not have much anyway – the challenge to criminals should be to do these home invasions on Mercer Island rather than South Tacoma.

While the payoff would be much, much, greater – there is one absolute fact as well…..

You will see the FBI and maybe the National Guard on every corner in wealthy neighborhoods if this starts happening.

  16. BigBlockChev says:

Go there for the real story on just how pervasive gangs are in Tacoma/Pierce County. It is a joke that the Mayor had to hire a Missouri firm for $50,000 when all she had to do was go to a local website for all the info she needs… identifies well over 100 gangs active in Pierce County.

IMO,time to energize a new “Untouchables” unit like Elliot Ness had in the 1930s – give them the authority to gun down known gangsters on sight.

What should become very clear to you when you go to is that these gangs are coming here mostly from California. We need to stop these insane sanctuary city policies that act as a magnet for the criminal element.

  17. What every private home should have is a trap door made out of the front porch with a deep pit underneath to prevent escape. The homeowner would have a lever inside to have the porch on a hinge drop the invaders “whoever the threat might be” into the pit.Maybe a home flamethrower option other lever to toast those to a nice black bbq crisp in the pit.

  18. troger888 says:

there are some very very stupid comments in here.

  19. I am hearing they were part of the juggalo clown gang or however you pronounce it. LOL, talk about your losers. Hopefuly some harm will come to them soon..

  20. BlaineCGarver says:

Look like my comment about NEEDING more dead gang members was deleted.

  21. I would never delight in someone’s death, but for scum like these thugs, I guarantee you I would not feel upset if they all found themselves relieved of their brains and vital organs after mistakenly targeting a shotgun-wielding homeowner. The thieves profession should be ultra-high risk. Us homeowners should make it that way.

  22. dlockner says:

I hope someone is waiting for them when they get released.

  23. troger888…As usual

  24. dinseattle says:

Dang it! I was hoping he got bit in the nads! Stupid people shouldn’t breed!

  25. lhittenr says:

Thank goodness the police responded to the 911 call even though there was no voice at the other end. Sometimes it works exactly as it is supposed to.

  26. ScaredPhone says:

“Someone should give granny a free handgun with self defense lessons.”

When that happened in Florida the old fellow ended up with a Second Degree murder charge.

Defending yourself and your community from Thugs is a lesser priority.

  27. Thedavenports says:

    Whats is a thug?
