An employee of a Mexican restaurant in Parkland accidentally sparked a fire today that destroyed the building.

The blaze was reported about 2 p.m. at Hacienda Real, 13021 Pacific Ave. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue crews responded but were quickly forced into defensive mode after flames reached the roof.

Crews used a propane weed burner earlier in the afternoon and then stored it in a back storage area of the restaurant. The hot nozzle ignited and employees quickly noticed smoke beneath a commercial refrigerator that backed up against the storage room, Assistant Chief Randy Stephens said.

The building was a total loss, with the value estimated at about $175,000.

Stephens said the building owner planned to sleep at the restaurant overnight until the insurance company can come out to secure the premises.

  2. cclngthr says:

It is that restaurant across from Top Kick pawn shop and next to the Lemay shop and towing yard.

It has been vacant for a couple-3 years.

  3. aguynamedmike says:

That place is not vacant, I was just in there 2 or 2 &1/2 mos ago, it has been closed recently for renovations, hence the new paint and 15k$ walk in fridge she just put in there.

  4. Fridge must not have been able to keep everything cool.

restaurant building is a total loss watched as they tried to save it verry old building use to be the brookdale inn for you oltimers has gone through many names past 10 years. glad no one was hurt try as they did, it was a tough one to put out looked like fire got cought inbetween false ceiling and roof they did a great job keeping it from spreading to guns and bows

  9. nosugarcoating says:

babytigers the article didn’t originally say what the business was. I can read.

  10. slindstrom says:

babytigers – the article does not say Pacific and Brookdale because there’s no such place. Brookdale ends about 1/2 mile east of Pacific. If you’re going to correct people you should check your facts (and maps).

  11. SPanaway1 says:

It is the building that used to be the Brookdale Inn.
