Suspect in attempted kidnapping at James Center pleads not guilty

A 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty today to charges related to an attempted kidnapping that occurred last week at James Center in Tacoma.

Christopher Mike Tasker II faces one count of second-degree attempted kidnapping and one count of second-degree assault. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Commissioner Meagan Foley ordered Tasker held in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

“This was a random act,” deputy prosecutor Pat Cooper said.

According to charging documents:

The victim told police she was walking home from the grocery store Thursday evening when she crossed through the parking lot at James Center and noticed a car with tinted windows driving close to her.

The vehicle passed her and then stopped in front of her. The driver got out and punched her in the side of the face.

The woman screamed for help and Tasker hit her several times on the top of the head while trying to drag her toward his open passenger door. He eventually let her go as she continued to resist and a passerby yelled at him.

Two witnesses jotted down Tasker’s license plate number and gave it to responding officers.

Police tracked the license plate to Tasker, who was staying with relatives in Tacoma.

He told police that he arrived in town March 26 and admitted to being in the area when the victim was attacked.

Tasker told officers he “saw a girl who he thought was pretty so he thought he would ask for her phone number.”

The girl screamed at him to get away and was “freaking out” so he crawled into his vehicle through the passenger door and fled.

Tasker denied touching the victim.

The victim was not able to pick Tasker out of a photo lineup.

Prosecutors said Tasker was found with a lighter, drug pipe and substance he called “spice” when he was arrested. Additional charges may be filed after test results come back.

The TNT seems so random about when it publishes names and when it doesn’t. It also doesnt seem to have any idea that the Internet has changed the game. If anyone looks at the jail roster online and looks at the names with * by them, that means they were booked in the last 24 hours. Often it is easy to find the name to match the story (click on name and it shows the booking charges. Also, there can be a huge story and all the other papers and the TNT doesn’t publish the name. But the TNT will publish personal details from someone’s divorce file (the gig harbor principal). Maybe it’s time to start an online local news source that does it right.
