A 34-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison in connection with the fatal shooting of another man in a South Tacoma alley two years ago.

Byron Alvarez had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in the March 25, 2010, death of Saul Lucas-Alfonso, 25.

Prosecutors alleged Alvarez and four other adults took part in the killing of Lucas-Alfonso.  Charging documents alleged Alvarez was trying to get compensation for a debt another man owed him. The man had been involved with Alvarez’s wife.

Alvarez and other members of an East Side street gang went to the man’s house and were breaking into his car, stealing items, in the alley of the 7000 block South Puget Sound Avenue and South Tacoma Way.

Lucas-Alfonso and two friends came upon the group and a fight ensued. As the suspects left, one fired a shot. Lucas-Alfonso was hit in the chest and died.

Alvarez’s wife, Leah Alvarez, also has been charged in the case. She is scheduled to go to trial in July on murder charges.

Three others have been charged in the deadly shooting and warrants have been issued for their arrest. Investigators suspect the men are in Mexico.

The slaying was one of three homicides in 2010 that was tied to members of the Eastside Lokotes Surenos street gang. Other members of the gang were charged in the fatal shooting of Camille Love and the assassination of the gang’s leader.

Not harsh enough, by any means. Especially for a known gang member. I would say the death penalty is in order for any gangster who kills a human being with a firearm.

Interesting thought WOLF, I suppose that murder using an Axe, Knife, or some sort of bunt object would provide for a less punitive punishment, right?

  3. interWOLFone says:

Apologies for not adding murder by axe, knife or blunt object. Thank you for pointing out my error.
