Tacoma Fire Chief Ronald Stephens, who’s served 35 years with department, is retiring.

The department announced Stephens’ decision on its website today.

“I feel honored to have had the privilege to serve as Fire Chief and work for the City of Tacoma,” Stephens said in the announcement. “I have enjoyed being part of the Tacoma Fire family these many years. I leave with the confidence that the department rests in good hands and will continue to provide excellent service to our community.”

Assistant Chief Jim Duggan will serve as interim chief while the city searches for a replacement for Stephens, city manager T.C. Broadnax said.
