Amina Bowman, the 8-year-old girl accidentally shot by a 9-year-old classmate who brought a gun to a Bremerton elementary school last week, underwent a fifth surgery Tuesday morning but her condition is stabilizing, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Amina has been listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle since Feb. 22, when she arrived with injuries from a .45-caliber bullet that struck her in the abdomen and arm. The bullet lodged near her spine.
The girl is still in the intensive care unit but doctors have upgraded her condition to serious, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.
Police believe the boy obtained the gun while visiting his mother’s house the weekend before Amina was shot. He then took the weapon to Armin Jahr Elementary School, where it accidentally fired while in his backpack.
Prosecutors have said they will seek probation for the boy.
