A 27-year-old Burlington man was arrested early this morning for driving the wrong way on Interstate 5 in Thurston County, according to the Washington State Patrol.
At least eight people dialed 911 about 3:45 a.m. today to report a 1996 Honda Civic that was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. Troopers believe the man got off the freeway at Trosper Road and then got back on the freeway heading in the same direction.
The driver eventually pulled over on the inside shoulder and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.
Neither he nor his passenger were injured.
“He showed a high level of impairment and told troopers he thought he was still in Seattle,” trooper Guy Gill said.
Gill said the incident had nothing to do with confusing roadway design or poor signage.
“It has everything to do with a driver making the choice to drive at an extreme level of impairment,” he said.
