The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has released a surveillance photo of Josh Powell taken the day before he set fire to his Graham-area rental home, killing himself and his two young sons.

Search warrants have revealed that Powell, 36, withdrew $7,000 from the bank last Saturday.

Investigators have said the move, along with others, showed that Powell was planning to blow up his house and kill his sons. Powell also purchased gasoline, gave away his sons’ clothes and toys and sent emails and left voicemails, saying goodbye and telling relatives what to do with his money and how to pay the bills.

The boys – 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden – had gone to Powell’s home Sunday afternoon for a scheduled supervised visit.

Powell, who had been the only person of interest named in the mysterious 2009 disappearance of his wife, lost custody of his sons last September after his father was charged with child pornography and voyeurism. Powell and his sons had been living with his father at the time.

Investigators say after Charlie and Braden arrived at their father’s home Sunday afternoon, Powell shut the door on the social worker who was supposed to supervise the visit. She tried to get inside but he ignored her requests.

The house exploded in flames minutes later. Investigators have said that Powell used a hatchet on his sons before setting the house on fire.

A funeral service for Charlie and Braden is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Life Center Church in Tacoma.
