Facebook effort launched to block Westboro Baptist picket

NorthWest Music Scene has launched a Facebook effort to keep a notoriously anti-gay church from picketing the funeral service for two young brothers killed Sunday in a violent house fire.

“We will be out in full force to help create a buffer so this memorial can take place peacefully,” the group wrote on the “Keep Westboro Church away from Powell Memorial” Facebook page.

Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, Powell were killed Sunday during a scheduled visit with their father, Josh Powell. A funeral service for the brothers is scheduled to begin Saturday at 11 a.m. at Life Center Church in Tacoma.

Margie Phelps, daughter of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church’s founder, tweeted Wednesday night that the church will attend the boys’ memorial service. The protest is to “remind” Gov. Chris Gregoire “they died because of her rebellion,” a reference to her support of same-sex marriages.

Occupy Seattle has announced a counterprotest.

NorthWest Music Scene encourages Facebook users to join them at Life Center Church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

  1. Cemeteries are private property. Shouldnt be too difficult to keep Westboro at bay.
Another strategy: make press releases giving false locations of the funeral.

  2. I understand the services have already been moved to a private location. It behooves the Cox family to make every effort to NOT make a circus out of this tragedy. It is our responsibility as a civilized socierty to refrain from aiding the press and the voyeurs who try to capitalize on this horror.
My thoughts and prayers to the Cox family.
My advice to them – keep your mouths shut lest you look like the same vultures in pursuit.
Certainly there are funeral agents who can provide these children’s families the quiet comfort they deserve without all the Barnum and Bailey hoop-la.

  3. These are not church people, they’re bullies. May God rain fire and brimstone on them.

  4. Chippert says:

They have already accomplished their goal – that of mass publicity for themselves and their “cause”. It is probable that they will not even show up.

  5. ginahopk says:

We should just ignore them and the press should avoid taking pictures of them. Don’t give them the attention they want

  6. Wrapper98439 says:

It has been announced as a public welcome event. They will get in. Keeping them out is discrimination. Once they disrupt the service, they can he removed, causing the circus. Sad.

  7. ReadNLearn says:

The OCCUPY types say they are going to be there, parasiting off the media.
