UPDATED at 11:57 a.m.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a hatchet-wielding man who broke into a patrol car and drove off this morning.

Deputies suspect the man might have been on drugs during the encounter.

Deputies responded to a neighborhood complaint around 7:30 a.m. in the Graham area. They found the shirtless man walking around with a hatchet, “acting crazy,” Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The deputies deployed a Taser on the man but it was ineffective.

The man took the hatchet and broke out the window of a patrol car, climbed inside and drove off.

Troyer said the man drove the patrol car down 176th Street East and turned onto Canyon Road East. Deputies were able to disable the patrol car in the 10900 block of Canyon Road East.

The deputies got the man out of the car. He continued to be uncooperative.  The deputies deployed a Taser and took the man into custody.

The man sideswiped several cars, causing minor injuries.

No deputies were injured, Troyer said.
