A state Department of Corrections worker upset about his pending divorce and his wife’s new boyfriend choked the woman unconscious and threatened to shoot her Monday, according to newly filed court papers.

Pierce County prosecutors today charged Charles Anthony Rodriguez, 33, with two counts of second-degree assault and one count each of unlawful imprisonment, felony harassment and attempting to elude a pursing police vehicle.

Prosecutors allege Rodriguez used a firearm in three of the counts, which would add extra time to any sentence he receives if convicted as charged.

Superior Court Judge pro-tem Sergio Armijo ordered Rodriguez jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Tacoma police arrested Rodriguez Monday following a chase and standoff near Skyline Elementary School. They found a loaded 9 mm pistol in his car, court records show.

The trouble began about 10 p.m. Sunday when Rodriguez confronted his wife at her apartment. The couple is separated but live in units in the same apartment complex, court records show.

The argued “about her new boyfriend and the divorce,” the records state. Rodriguez’ 10-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and his and his wife’s 7-year-old son were inside the apartment at the time.

The argument continued until about 4 a.m. Monday when Rodriguez attacked his wife, choking her until she blacked out, court records show. She told detectives she woke up in another room and found her husband holding a gun, the records state.

“He pointed the gun at her and said he was going to kill her and then himself,” the records show.

His daughter came into the room crying, and he did not make good on his threat, the documents state.

His wife later got the kids ready for school, and Rodriguez rode along for the drop-off. He wife said she did not resist because she was afraid he might kill her, the records state.

Once at the school, the woman went inside and reported what had happened earlier that morning. Police were called. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and school officials locked down Skyline Elementary.

Rodriguez then drove off with his daughter still in the car. He later dropped her off with relatives. He also called other relatives to tell them he was going back to the school to get his son, the records show.

Police spotted his car and gave chase, but Rodriguez refused to stop – driving at speeds upwards of 60 mph – and avoided spike strips laid across one street by driving into oncoming traffic, the records state.

He eventually stopped but refused to leave his car for nearly 45 minutes. He eventually surrendered.

Rodriguez has been suspended from his job until his case is resolved.

Dude! Ditch the B, don’t let her set you up or allow yourself to get so mad you choke her out. She was already hooked up while still married to you, according to the report. Kick her to the curb. It’s too late for Dude here, but other Dudes who could be in the same situation, a woman can get you all messed up in the head. Never get mad enough to touch her wrong. Just leave. (And hope she don’t make up some stuff about you.)

Don’t hook up with women with loose morals or you’re going to get hurt. She moves on, you move on. She ain’t worth doing time over, she ain’t worth nothing if she’s cheating on you!

  4. I know of a similar case involving these rent-a-cops they choose to call “officers”. This character sounds just like the macho, tough guy on a power trip that I knew about.

I visited the house once where this particular person was “in charge”…They had the most friendly family dog you would want to know…wagging his tail and licking your hand….then the “big shot” walked into the room and the poor animal ran and cowered in a corner!!! THAT single observation showed me all I needed to know about that guy. I’m happy to understand he is no longer employed in that field, and who knows where he is. But if this is what the corrections departments are hiring, it makes me wonder about their practices and standards!

@ dcr628….Think you might be stereotyping just a bit? Just because you ran into one di<khead doesn't mean squat about the rest of the people in that field. Your broad generalizations do no one any good and make ME wonder about your agenda.

Every occupation is littered with morons like this turd. But Skippy sadly some people seem to show their ignorance by branding the rest as the same. I just hope that whoever his Supervisors are, past and present are documenting things. It may be a mute point if he’s convicted criminally, but through documentation is needed to successfully fire individuals for cause in most unionized organizations. I hope for a successful one in this case, he needs to go here he once worked, wouldn’t that be an odd twist.

Ah, corrections “officers”. The garbage even police departments won’t take.

Amazing job TPD in descalating the situation. Please keep my old doc coworker safe. Seek help Rodriguez… God bless…

  9. Rattler761 says:

Sennapod could very apparently do the job of a Corrections Officer better than any of them because he has such a high opinion of them. I know a few and I applaud them on the job they do. They deal with dopers, drunks and just plain bad people 24/7 with very litlle or no thanks. Why dont you walk in their shoes for a day then make your judgement.
