A Sound Transit bus caught fire this afternoon near South 17th Street and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma.

The three people on the bus – two riders and the driver – escaped uninjured after the blaze broke out about 3:15 p.m., said Lars Erickson, a spokesman for Pierce Transit, which contracts to run some Sound Transit buses operating in Pierce County.

The fire was contained to a rear-wheel assembly and appeared to be brake-related, Erickson said. The cause of the fire was unknown.

The bus was towed from the scene.

Forgot to release the parking break? LOL!

  2. Why do you ask two dog’s? If the parking brake is set, the bus will not move.

    Crabby,
It depends on how well the parking brake is working. Sometimes a parking brake will allow a vehicle to roll, albeit somewhat slowly, but if the bus was traveling slowly to begin with the bus driver may not have noticed.

I drove a car once a good quarter mile before I noticed that the driver prior to me had applied the parking brake. I noticed when I turned onto a main road and couldn’t get up to speed.

When we lived in Anchorage, the rule was to never apply the parking break during the freezing winter weather because it might stick, but it doesn’t usually get cold enough to worry about that here.
